V-bronze (also called “cushion type”) weatherstripping is a pre-formed metal strip bent into a V profile. When compressed between a door or window and its frame, both legs of the V make contact, creating a double seal that blocks air, dust, moisture, and insects.
It is made from Alloy 230 (85% copper, 15% zinc), 0.009″ thick, and tempered to maintain consistent spring tension across all temperatures, from well below zero to over 100°F.
Unlike flat (Pro-Type) spring bronze, which works best in tight, uniform gaps, the V-shaped format is specifically designed for the larger, uneven gaps common in doors and windows that have shifted and settled over a century of use.
Why Does Foam Weatherstrip Fail?
The average foam or vinyl weatherstrip lasts 2 to 3 years before it compresses, peels, cracks, or falls off entirely. Adhesive softens in summer heat and hardens in winter cold, pulling away from the frame and leaving sticky residue behind. What was supposed to seal your window is now a visible, crumbling mess that lets the same drafts right back in.
Over the life of a historic home, that means 25 to 50 replacements per door or window, 50 trips to the hardware store, hundreds of dollars in materials, and the same cold air finding its way through every few winters.
V-bronze weatherstrip does not rely on adhesive, foam memory, or rubber flexibility. It is nailed in place with a mechanical compression seal that holds its shape for decades. Bronze alloy performs the same at zero degrees as it does at 100. It is invisible when installed. And if it ever loses tension, a putty knife restores it in seconds without replacing anything.
Why V-Bronze Outperforms Other Weatherstrip Types
The V-fold creates a mechanical compression seal that does not rely on adhesive, foam memory, or rubber flexibility, all of which degrade over time. Bronze alloy does not.
The U.S. Department of Energy classifies spring metal weatherstripping as “durable” and “invisible when in place,” while rating foam as “susceptible to weather, visible, and inefficient.” Research has measured V-bronze weatherstripping reducing whole-house air infiltration significantly, and combined with storm windows, air infiltration can drop over 70%.
The National Park Service recommends weatherstripping as a repair treatment in Preservation Brief #9, and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation specifically include weatherstripping as an acceptable addition to historic windows and doors.
What size v-bronze do I need? Choosing Your Width
1-1/8″ width is the universal choice for exterior and interior doors, casement windows, and most standard double-hung windows. It fits any door or window with a frame thickness greater than 1″, which covers the vast majority of residential applications.
5/8″ width is purpose-built for narrow double-hung window jambs where a wider strip would interfere with the sash weight pulley and cord system. It can be installed without removing the sash, a significant time saver on a whole-house project.

- 36″ fits standard door head jambs and typical window widths
- 48″ covers taller double-hung windows and wider casement openings
- 60″ handles tall windows, French door panels, and mid-height applications
- 93″ covers full-height door side jambs in a single unbroken strip, no piecing required
For a standard exterior door, two 93″ strips (side jambs) and one 36″ strip (head jamb) covers the full perimeter.
Applications Professional Choice
V-bronze works on wood and metal doors, double-hung windows, casement windows, sliding windows, transoms, and cabinet doors. It is the preferred choice for doors and windows with gaps that vary along their length, since the V-fold accommodates inconsistency better than flat weatherstrip. It is not designed for sliding glass doors, garage doors, or applications where the gap exceeds 1/2″. For gaps smaller than 1/8″ or very uniform channels, our spring bronze may be the better option.
Restoration contractors and preservation specialists rely on spring bronze because it meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards, satisfies historic tax credit requirements, and eliminates callbacks. Unlike foam or rubber, spring bronze does not compress permanently, does not fail in temperature extremes, and does not require replacement on any reasonable timeline. The 93″ length covers a full door side jamb in one continuous strip, reducing joints and improving seal quality. Pre-cut lengths eliminate the need to measure and cut from 100-foot rolls on site. If spring bronze ever loses tension (rare, even after decades), a putty knife or flathead screwdriver restores it in seconds. No removal, no replacement, no new material.

Pro-Type (single-leaf) fills tighter, more uniform gaps (1/16″ to 1/4″) and comes in rolls. V-shaped is generally preferred for doors and casement windows. Pro-Type is generally preferred for double-hung window channels where gaps are tight and consistent. Many whole-house projects use both.
There are documented installations over 100 years old still functioning. The bronze alloy does not degrade from UV exposure, temperature cycling, or compression fatigue the way foam, vinyl, rubber, and silicone do. If it ever loses tension, a putty knife restores it without replacement.
A small hammer (10 oz tack hammer works well), tin snips or old scissors for cutting, and the appropriate copper-plated or bronze nails. That is it. No specialized tools, no adhesive, no heat gun. Optional: an awl for pre-punching nail holes in hardwood, and a putty knife for adjusting tension after installation.
A standard 80″ exterior door needs two 93″ strips (side jambs, trimmed to fit) and one 36″ strip (head jamb). That comes to $84* for the 1-1/8″ width or $76* for the 5/8″ width, plus nails. For the price of replacing foam tape 50 times over the next century, you install spring bronze once.

From the Experts Craftsman Notes
- V-bronze ships as straight lengths and cannot be rolled without damage. Store flat until installation.
- Nails are sold separately. Use 3/4″ copper-plated steel nails for standard installations or solid bronze nails in coastal or marine environments.
- This product fills gaps from 1/8″ to 1/2″. For gaps under 1/8″, use Pro-Type (flat) spring bronze weatherstrip instead.
- Handle with care before installation. Kinks cannot be fully removed and may compromise the seal at that point.
